MPIA student awarded Boren Fellowship to study in Turkey

For John Danvers, spending the year studying Turkish in Turkey thanks to a Boren Fellowship is an exciting but logical next step on his academic journey.

John Danvers headshot“I’ve always been fascinated by the intersection of language, culture, and diplomacy and believe learning Turkish will give me valuable insights into the country’s political landscape and its role in global affairs," he shared. "The experience will also complement my studies at Pitt and SPIA by helping me become fluent in the Turkish language, something I've studied while a student here.”

The Boren Fellowship is an initiative of the National Security Education Program that provides funding for graduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests. One of the most prestigious and competitive national awards for students seeking to expand their language and regional knowledge to service in public sector roles, the award also requires fellows commit to at least one year of work in a federal agency upon the completion of their studies, with preference given to applicants who demonstrate a longer-term commitment to government service.

Danvers, a second-year Master of Public and International Affairs (MPIA) student pursuing a concentration in Security and Intelligence Studies, believes the opportunity will provide him with skills and experience he’ll use in a future career in national security.

“Ultimately, my goal is to enter the national security field,” he said. “I see this experience in Turkey as a step toward building the regional expertise and language proficiency necessary to contribute meaningfully in that role. I’m particularly looking forward to connecting with people who can offer firsthand perspectives on the issues that shape Turkish society."
