Marla Ripoll

Marla Ripoll is the Interim Dean of the School of Public and International Affairs. She is a Professor of Economics and serves as Core Faculty in both the Center for Latin American Studies and the Global Studies Program. Her research is at the intersection of macroeconomics, development economics and demographics. Her work studies the determinants of cross-country differences in schooling, fertility, and life expectancy, and how international trade shapes productivity and economic outcomes in the developing world. Recent work in demographics examines fertility choice, investments in children, intergenerational transfers, and the origins of population implosion. Her research has appeared in various academic journals including the Review of Economic Studies, the Journal of Monetary Economics, the International Economic Review and the Review of Economics and Statistics.

She is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Macroeconomics. She is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Carnegie-Rochester-NYU Conference, the Human Capital and Economic Opportunity Group, and the Economics Research Network of the Banco de la República, Colombia’s Central Bank.

She received a PhD from the University of Rochester and a BA (with honors) from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. Prior to her doctoral studies she worked as Research Economist at Banco de la República, Colombia’s Central Bank, and at the National Planning Department in Colombia.
